Michael explains Calligraphy

Calligraphy is the way of putting the universe of artistic writing into one stroke, without compromises and with the greatest deal of concentration and expertise. Calligraphy, which etymologically arises from the ancient greek words kallos “beauty” and graphẽ “writing”, is geared towards creating something beautiful with signs. Timothy Donaldson, an English calligrapher and letter worker, says, that writing is the pure, unmodified line. Unmodified of course does not mean, that there is no modification with the possibilities of the instrument, like twisting, rotating and squeezing as you go. But if you change your accomplished piece of art, you’ve just created. That is where hand lettering starts. As calligraphy means beautiful writing, it is the writing part to be focused on. Anything else is not calligraphy anymore. Some lexicons are defining Calligraphy as a visual art related to writing. It is the design and execution of lettering with a broad tip instrument or brush in one stroke (as opposed to built up lettering, in which the letters are drawn). Have a look at the inspirations above to get a small insight of what is calligraphy and to identify it.
